AW-280E NewAir 28 Bottle Thermoelectric Wine Cooler Review

I've owned this fridge for three months now, and for the price, it hasperformed reasonably well--so far. When you add together the price and the shipping rates, you probably won't be able to find a cheaper thermoelectric wine fridge with this storage capacity. (I consider the non-vibrating feature of thermoelectric fridges an important requirement for cellaring wine long term.) However, there are some definite deficiencies and one really big question mark about long-term performance.

As my wine collection has grown, I've purchased several wine fridges from different manufacturers. Of the four wine fridges I now own, this one has the cheapest look and feel. Yes, it looks quite attractive from a distance, but when you get up close, you notice that every element of its construction seems just a little (and sometimes a lot) flimsier than my other fridges. For example, the material used for the inside walls of this fridge looks and feels like extremely thin plastic that could easily crack or be punctured. (The plastic liner seems comparable in weight and thickness to the thin plastic that is often used for packagaing small electronics accessories like headphones or video cables.) This plastic inside wall liner will probably hold up just fine if treated gently, but it seems like a clue to overall quality.

Similarly, the chrome trays that hold the bottles are just a little thinner, lighter, and flimsier than those in my other wine fridges. Speaking of the trays, with a tray loaded with bottles, you are supposed to be able to pull it out a few inches to get easier access to the bottles and a better view of the label. But the trays on this fridge do not slide smoothly once they are loaded with wine. Instead, they snag and get hung up. In fact, I worry that the force required to unstick and pull out a tray with bottles on it either might cause the bottles to come flying out on onto the floor or might tear the thin plastic that lines the inside walls of the fridge. So to get a tray out safely, you have to remove the bottles first, which defeats the purpose of having trays that are supposed to slide partway out for easier viewing and access.

With gentle and careful use, you can probably avoid problems with the flimsy physical construction of this fridge; however, the thing that worries me most about this fridge is the long-term endurance of the thermoelectric cooling device. This fridge sits side-by-side with another fridge I own that was made by another manufacturer and has exactly the same storage capacity. Compared to the other manufacturer's fridge, the AW fridge's cooling device kicks on and runs more often and longer--probably more than twice as long--to maintain the same temperature. With the temp set at 55 degrees, this fridge's cooling system runs almost non-stop, never shutting off for more than just a few minutes before kicking back on for another long stretch, and that's what makes me worry about long term durability. Because of my concern about the cooling device running constantly, I've raised the temp setting from 55 to 58 degrees, and that seems to help somewhat, but this thermoelectric fridge's cooling device still runs much more often andmuch longer with the setting at 58 degrees than my other same-size thermoelectric fridge does at 55. It only makes sense that the more often the cooling device kicks on, and the longer it runs, the shorter will be its working lifespan.

One last word to the wise: For those who are just starting to appreciate the pleasures and advantages of cellaring your own wine, maybe it makes sense to buy a small cheap "starter" unit until you can decide whether your wine bug is a temporary infection, a manageable illness, or a lifelong obsession. But before doing as I did--buying a second, and then a third, and then a fourth fairly small fridge--consider taking the money you'd spend on a bunch of small fridges and instead putting those dollars into the cost of one higher quality, higher capacity unit that will solve your wine-storage needs over the long haul. Better yet, find 25 or 30 cubic feet of space under the stairs or in a closet of your house, wall it off, put in racks, insulate it, and buy a cooling unit to refrigerate it, to make your own mini-cellar where you can easily store several hundred bottles.

The Bottom Line: This fridge seems like a fair deal for the price, but if I had it to do over, I think I'd be better off in the long haul spending just a little more for a probably more durable fridge of the same size (which you can find on sale for not that much more), or putting the money into a much larger fridge or cellaring system that would better satisfy both present and future wine storage needs.

Word Play Refrigerator Magnets - Therapy Review

We bought this magnet set for our (dysfunctional but lovable) would-be therapist nephew... what a waste. First off, can we talk about the QUALITY of this thing? The words on the magnets for the most part cut into the tear-off points...so that some magnets have missing letters! I guess its pretty inexpensive, but it was so worthless.It's impossible to create coherent sentences, and some of the word choices seem ridiculous.I wouldn't buy it again. Total waste of money.

ZICS360NRRH GE Monogram 36" Built-In Bottom-Freezer Refrigerator - Right Hinge - Stainless Steel Review

My ZICS360NXLH/ZICS360NXRH is less than three years old.An internal manufacturing defect caused my unit to slowly drip water over a long period of time, causing damage to the floor beneath the unit and mold build up inside the back panel of the unit. The defect also allowed mold to grow inside the post-filter water line, thereby contaminating the ice cubes it produces. Since the unit is built in to cabinetry the problem became apparent only after the floor began to buckle outside the unit's footprint.

GE Monogram would not address the defect at all, has no technical specialists to talk to, and suggested I take the issue up with my insurance company. To make matters worse, I pay for the repair to their product for what is clearly a longstanding manufacturing defect inside the back panel. Their unwillingness to listen or even inspect the item is surprising and shameful, and their eagerness to externalize all responsibility without regard to product quality or customer experience is not indicative of a high end company. Strongly suggest paying a few hundred more for the SubZero.

The Wine Enthusiast 28-Bottle Silent Wine Refrigerator - Stainless Steel (2720229) Review

We purchased this wine cooler from Wine Enthusiast a month ago to replace a larger Danby cooler that we had used for a little over four years. The Danby suddenly developed a fatal flaw that could not be fixed (the temperature kept increasing and could not be controlled). Needless to say, we were not interested in buying another Danby product. To control energy costs and conserve space, we looked for a smaller model, and the "Silent" model from Wine Enthusiast looked like it would fit the bill. We also liked the size, because we were considering placing it in our kitchen. When it arrived, we decided that, to keep the kitchen uncluttered, we would place the cooler in the laundry room, and we're glad we did. This model is by no means "silent." It has been installed with plenty of room on all sides, seems to be keeping a fairly steady temperature (plus/minus 1 degree of setting), but it does have a noticeable hum. In fact, it makes more noise than our kitchen's Amana refrigerator. The unit looks attractive, but you should be aware that larger bottles (particularly Burgandy-shaped bottles--those wider at the bottom than the top, and most champagne bottles) will not fit in this unit. In fact, even to load or remove standard Bordeaux bottles, you have to pull the tray partly out and carefully jiggle it back in. I guess that's the price you pay for the unit's compact size.

I should have known better!My old Kenmore died and I bought this noxious import because ita) fit in a 32" nook; b) I didn't want an ice maker; andc) it looked great.("Sleek European styling") I didn't know that it has a DC compressor and emits a constant whine (or bass hum, buzz or hum, depending on the cycle).At its worst it is like having a truck idling in your kitchen.But you always hear it.The noise kicks in even if you haven't opened the door in an hour, and cycles last from 30 minutes to what seems like hours.The sales rep I finally reached via the escalation dept. confirmed that it's not a question of decibels, but of frequency.As for noise complaints I found after it was too late, he reluctantly admitted that, yes, there are some people who find the noise really disturbing.Or as the repairman told me, "I know it's loud, but that's normal for this thing.That's just the way they make them these days," he said, and showed me how the high speed compressor was attached to the back of the machine with a few screws and with absolutely nothing to soften the sharp whine it makes most of the time.My Kenmore rumbled a bit but it never, ever made that awful shrill piercing relentless whine.I can hear it in my office or bathroom adjacent to the kitchen but not upstairs or in the shower.I can't even imagine what this thing would be like in an apartment!

These new compressors are a known issue, which is something I wish I'd found out before I bought this thing from Albert Lee appliances in Seattle. You'll find complaints about GE, Frigidaire, Kenmore and others.But at 17.3 cf, most of them are half the price of this sleek European mediocrity.

Not everyone is sensitive to noise.If you're oblivious to tv test patterns, dentists drills, high tension wires or a speaker when you leave the stereo on, you might think it was pricey but okay.At least it's prettier than the white molded plastic you usually see.

But if you think that hearing your fridge when you're in another room at twice the price, either buy a mid-priced fridge with the same or more features, or get a Sub Zero for $3,000, and steer clear of Fisher & Paykel products.This is by far the worst appliance I have ever owned.

Electrolux : EW23BC71IS 36in 22.6 cu. ft. Counter-Depth French-Door Refrigerator - Stainless Steel Review

We have been on a journey to find a great, stylish and functional counter depth refrigerator. We are replacing a perfectly fine Kitchen Aid side by side that we put in a second home. First, we chose a Samsung side by side, but were not satisfied with it's refrigerator temperature. We set it at 34, but it never seemed cold enough. Milk was never "ice cold" as we were accustomed to. We started monitoring the temperatures, and it was typically around 38-43 degrees. Samsung was unable to remedy this issue, even after sending out a new replacement. Then we chose a GE Profile model, but it was a similar scenario, with wide temperature swings between the setting of 34, and 44 degrees, so a return of the GE was in order after service was unable to remedy it's large temperature swings.

Now, onto the Electrolux. This was a favorite from the start when we were shopping, but we were scared off by some reviews. We decided to go for it anyway, and are pleased with that decision, so far. However, the first one delivered did not cool at all. A service tech was dispatched immediately, and he found that there was a broken line from the compressor, due to damage in shipping, no fault of the unit, and all the refrigerant had escaped. The dealer brought the GE back until another Electrolux could be ordered and delivered.

Upon recieving the second Electrolux, it is performing nicely. Internal temperature is as stated on the Wave Touch Panel at 34 and -4 degrees for the freezer (which, by the way, you can set to show the refrigerator and freezer temps at all times). The units appearance is of good quality, being stainless steel on all sides, sturdy handles, and a modern appearance with Wave Touch Controls, which are easy to use. The doors are simple to align or adjust if needed.

The interior of this unit is 22.6 cu/ft, so as counter depth goes, it is decent. With edgeless glass shelves, ball bearing glides on all drawers, a large temperature controlled drawer with digital programmed settings, 2 good sized slide out bins, and exceptionaly well done LED lighting, this unit's interior is impressive.

We especially like the temperature controlled drawer, which can be adjusted from 28 to 40+ degrees. The drawer is large enough for party platters, and can keep fresh meats at near freezing, or beer can be kept at a very nice 28 degrees, or wines at a favorite selected temperature. The ice maker does take up a fair amount of space, but for ice and water in the door, it is a worth while sacrifice.

The icemaker has had some negative reviews, but so far ours is fine. The cubes are rounded, with a divit. I'm not sure why this is considered "Drink Friendly", but they are nice. One issue is that the cubes seem to come out with some vengence. However, by simply putting your glass or ice bucket close to the dispensing chute...problem solved. We have seen no melted ice puddles in the catch basin. Water dispensing is simple, and functional. We have only had this unit for a few days, so I can't comment on ice production quantity, but it is supposed to be better than most, per Electrolux specifications.

The freezer has 2 deep slide out bins, and 1 shallow one, with dividers and smooth ball bearing slides. One of our wire dividers does not stay in place, but that is no big issue at all. Space is good, and well utilized. Lighting in the freezer is excellent.

If I listen closely, I can hear the unit running, but sound is not obtrusive or noticably louder than any of the other units we have had recently. I would say it is quiet.

Pros: Operates at accurate temperatures set, huge slide out temperature controlled drawer, Exceptionally well done LED lighting and appearance, Wave Touch Controlls, functional use of space. Looks and feels high quality. We finally have really cold milk again.

Cons: High end of price scale, Ice maker takes up some refrigerator space, and some door storage.

Avanti Refrigerator, 4.4 Cubic Feet - Black And Platinum Review

I ordered this refrigerator on 9/5/2009.

I am here to WARN YOU... Please do NOT buy from Dependable Resource! They are the WORST COMPANY I have ever had the DISPLEASURE of dealing with in all my 78 years on this planet.

I'll explain why:

Ordered my Avanti Refrigerator on 9/5/09. Unit arrived on 9/15. I wasn't home but the delivery person who brought it was HORRIBLY RUDE to my 78 year old wife. So RUDE in fact, that had I been there-- I would have refused delivery of the item just on principal.

Once installed, the refrigerator started making loud noises. I attempted to contact Amazon about my problem-- but I was sending my emails to the wrong place. (At the time, I did NOT know Amazon had a "800" Customer Service telephone number.) By late October, the fridge was completely dead and NOT cooling at all.

Finally, I vented my frustration at Amazon's LACK OF CONTACT to my Son in November 2009-- who understands Amazon MUCH BETTER than I. He told me I had NOT purchased the refrigerator from Amazon but from a SECONDARY SELLER named Dependable Resource. I had NO IDEA I had purchased this fridge from anyone but Amazon.

My son helped me file an A-Z Guarantee claim with Amazon. Amazon promptly said I needed to have the poor condition of the Avanti refrigerator verified by a repair person and that I would have to contact the manufacturer to do so.

Meanwhile, DEPENDABLE RESOURCE NEVER ANSWERED ANY OF THE EMAILS I-- AND MY SON-- REPEATEDLY SENT TO THEM.

NOT ONE REPLY.

I contacted Avanti and a very brusque customer service rep set up a repair appointment.

The repairman come out on 12/10/09. After a thorough examination, he told me that BOTH the COMPRESSOR and HEATER (the TWO MAIN COMPONENTS of a refrigerator) were COMPLETELY SHOT. He called Avanti and told them this. He was also kind enough to post his findings on Amazon for me-- to Amazon's A-Z Guarantee Team.

Turns out the unit had also been HORRIBLY BENT on one side (sometime before delivery) as well. I had no idea. I thought the side was sloped that way during manufacture-- not damaged!

Long story short-- after initially not knowing who or how to properly contact Amazon or Dependable Resource-- and then being led on and jerked around for months... Amazon DENIED my A-Z Claim... Even though they always acted very compassionate on the telephone and their SUPERVISORS told me REPEATEDLY I would be receiving a FULL REFUND.

To add to the insult, Dependable Resource DENIED my refund because I had NOT contacted them within 30 days... Even though they ALSO always acted like they believed that the refrigerator was NOT working properly and that they understood why I had been confused on who to initially contact with my problem.

I understand that it was my ignorance that has initially caused these return problems. But I cannot abide by the fact that I was "STORIED AROUND" for a long time and given FALSE assurances by both Amazon and Dependable Resource-- to the point that I can NO LONGER even file a complaint with my Credit Card company.

I would like to think that a REPUTABLE retailer would have contingency plans for folks who don't understand the internet as well as others. (Yes, we exist!) In fact, I wouldn't be writing this review/comment today if not for my Son's help.

So, in the end, I paid over $400 for a bar refrigerator that arrived SEVERELY DAMAGED and NEVER WORKED PROPERLY from DAY ONE.

I cannot recommend the Avanti product-- as it is obviously flimsy and prone to failure. It never worked properly out of the box. The breakdowns of MAJOR COMPONENTS may have been caused by damage that occurred somewhere in the shipping process-- but I will NEVER know.

I also cannot recommend the product because Avanti's Customer Service has been severely lacking as well. You'd think, after having their own REPAIR PERSON give them a valid report on their refrigerator back on 12/10/2009, that I would have a NEW REFRIGERATOR ALREADY... But as of 1/25/2010, I am still waiting. (I was just on the phone with them AGAIN today-- before writing this review.)

NO HELP or CONSIDERATION from DEPENDABLE RESOURCE. Nothing but FALSE HOPE from Amazon. And NO HELP from Avanti.

Good thing I'm RETIRED because I am contacting several BETTER BUSINESS BUREAUS this week-- as well as several State's Attorney Generals.

My family spends TEN of THOUSANDS of DOLLARS with Amazon every year... And I REFUSE to be treated in such a SHODDY MANNER just because I was ignorant of the inner workings of the internet.

I will either get a REPLACEMENT REFRIGERATOR or MY MONEY.

Either way, I STRONGLY URGE you to NEVER BUY ANYTHING from Dependable Resource and NEVER BUY ANY HIGH TICKET ITEM from an Amazon SECONDARY SELLER.

Please learn from my mistake and buy your BIG TICKET items LOCALLY.

Danby Compact Refrigerator 1.8 Cu.Ft - DAR195BL Review

I'd read some reviews on other sites for this model about how lots of people had to adjust the temp because their drinks were too cold (or even freezing).Since that's how cold I want my fridge to be able to cool, I bought one.The other reviews were right!The unit is advertised to keep a temp that's 40 degrees cooler than the surrounding temp. I can testify it does that and more.I have this in in an office environment at work, which is always near 70 degrees.The first time I got this fridge running it cooled down to the high 20's - my drinks were partially frozen and undrinkable.That means this fridge is capable of cooling to a little more than 40 degrees than it's surrounding temp. Perfect!I merely adjusted the temp a little so now it hovers around the low 30's.That means I can depend on my drinks being ice-cold.The knob for adjusting the temp is in the back, so it's a little hard to reach.But fortunately it's near the top, so you don't need to pull out the fridge to reach it. You just have to crouch down all the way and reach over the top.

I work in southern California where it's now in the 90's outside, so it's aweseome when I'm hot and sweaty to be able to open up my fridge and pull out an ice-cold drink.I'm actually going to buy another one for home!

The only problem I had is the first one arrived defective - didn't cool at all.The vendor arranged a UPS pick-up (fortunately I'd kept the packaging - it was dead out of the box) and within a few short days the replacement unit arrived.It's worked perfectly since.

Cuisinart CWC-3200 32-Bottle Private Reserve Wine Cellar Review

This is a very quiet unit; when it comes on there is only a small murmur.The shelves are adjustable, which is nice.I feel confident buying a Cuisinart product too.The only draw back is that if it is to hold 32 bottles, they have to be pretty skinny.Regular bottles and the wine bottles from my wine club take up more room so it only holds 24.Also, if you store champagne it will take up 3 places.But at least they are adjustable and good quality shelves.

Wine Enthusiast Silent 12 Bottle Touchscreen Wine Refrigerator Review

This is my second Wine Enthusiast Silent refrigerator, but this one is a huge disappointment. My first is the 32-bottle version and it keeps the wine cool and is really silent.

This one, conversely, has a couple of pretty noisy fans. I don't know how they call it silent. Also, it kicks out a lot of heat, which my larger version does not.

Finally, good luck getting 12 bottles in here. I don't mean large champagne bottles or anything, just standard wine bottles. I can barely squeeze 8 bottles in here. I would avoid this model.

GE GFSS2HCYSS 22.2 cu. Ft. French Door Refrigerator - Stainless Steel Review

We like our GE "French Door" fridge. It looks good and works fine. But don't think of getting it without the insurance plan. We've had to replace the central "brain". We've had to replace a door latch. We are getting ready now to call for a new shelf and crisper track because both have broken.
I would guess that without the insurance we would soon have put as much in repairs as we paid for the fridge. However, ours was a brand new model, and perhaps they have worked some of the bugs out. We love it. We really have no complaints. Just be sure you take the insurance when it's offered. And you can be sure we'll be renewing our policy when it expires. The service has been excellent.

Whirlpool : GX5FHDXVY Refrigerator Review

I've had my fridge for about 1 month now, and so far it's been working fine.It looks pretty and all, BUT I have to say that I am not very happy with the storage capacity of this fridge.The door bins are curved, so you can fit VERY FEW items in one bin.You can't fit many tall things (i.e. wine bottles after they've been opened) if you have some other things there like milk and/or juice.The coke can dispenser is nice IF YOU DRINK FROM CANS!We don't and there's no way to change out that bin.It's just that my older Kenmore fridge (much cheaper) had a LOT more storage than this one.Too many curves in this model, which really bringe down storage capacity.

This was the one item that I did not look at carefully when buying my kitchen appliances. Probably would not buy it again.

This is a very handy gadget for me because I can monitor the temps in my fridge in different places to see where the colder and hotter spots are. It is just the right size so as not to take up too much space, and the dial is easily readable.Build quality is good, no complaints.As for accuracy, I compared it against a different brand right next to each other and the readings are similar so I will have to assume it is accurate. I'm not using it for critical applications anyway, just making sure the fridge is cold enough for safe food storage.I would buy this again.

Whirlpool : GS6NHAXVY 36in 25.6 cu. ft. Side by Side Refrigerator - Monochromatic Stainless Steel Review

We purchased this fridge three months ago to replace an older GE Profile fridge. We are overall happy with the fridge although there has been one consistent issue with the ice maker.

Note: This fridge is overall the same as the all stainless model except the sides are painted a matching gray (instead of the sides being complete stainless).Having seen the paint I don't know why anyone opts for the "full wrap" expense as it looks great either way.

Pros:
-Looks: Very nice looking, overall the front fit and finish of this fridge is excellent.The build quality throughout is on par with any fridge in the class.
-Energy efficient:This system is a very energy efficient fridge.As a matter of fact it's rated as about as energy efficient a fridge as you can buy in the states (estimated annual cost to run around $65)
-Excellent features: The measuring water dispenser, options for lighting, cooling, etc on the front control panel are easy to use and well designed.The large container fill spout works great.
-Bins: This thing has huge bins and they are very easy to see in to.

Cons:
-Ice Maker: The in-door ice maker is good.It makes a lot of ice.The problem is that the fill spout on ours (where the water fills the freeze tray) seems to ice up pretty consistently which causes water to rain down in the freezer and coat everything. This requires a complete many many hour defrost to get all the clogged ice bits to thaw and drip out.I'm pretty upset about this as this is a $2,000+ fridge
-Space:Not as roomy as our old GE.I believe this is because of the shelf layout in the fridge.Overall it's good but not excellent.We have always felt like it needed another shelf.
-Silly can holder:American fridges seem to be packed with soda can holders these days (much like cars).This fridge is not ludicrous in the number it has (like some).However the can holder at the top of the fridge door is almost completely useless.The way it holds cans (not that we have any!) is such that if the door is opened or closed quickly the cans fall out (and on your toes or food).My wife tried yogurt and a number of things up there but since the slots are can shaped and we don't really drink beer or soda from cans.. it's a useless shelf
-In-door shelf space:Our old GE Profile could hold a huge amount in it's door.This fridge holds much less.I'm not sure if it's all the space lost to smooth shelf angles or what but we had a heck of time time transplanting what easily fit in our GE to the Whirlpools door.

All in all I like the fridge.Fridges in this class are a balancing act of space, looks, features (ice maker etc), and how you like to store things (french vs side by side vs over-under).This is a good "premium" grade fridge that I would buy over a KitchenAide any day.Although with the ice maker problems in the first three months I'm wishing I'd have opted for the GE (in the same price band).

On a side note Whirlpool has an EXCELLENT online FAQ support section on their website that has cured more than a few of our little "what the heck?!" moments and turned them in to "OH I GET IT!".

We saw the Amana French-door bottom-freezer fridge about a year ago and fell in love with it.As it turns out, we have had a fairly mixed experience with it.

I'll say that there are quite a few things that we like about it.Overall, we like the layout and flexibility of this fridge a lot.All of the shelves are adjustable to allow for customizing the space for what we need.The layout makes the fridge feel bigger than the other 25 CF fridges we've used or looked at.The quality of the ice maker and water filtration is nice.I do find the bottom-freezer a nice feature for our family.The best feature of the French-doors for us is that they don't swing open as wide as conventional doors, which is good for energy usage and for not blocking passage through our tight kitchen.They're also convenient when you have to grab something quick out of the door.

That said, after using it a while, there are a few things that we don't like about this fridge:
1)After a few months of use, it started getting kind of loud.As it turns out, this was the sound of the cooling fan dying.When it finally died, we had no cold air in the fridge compartment.It was still under warranty, but I wasn't happy about replacing the fan after only about 7 months.(It's still occasionally louder than I'd prefer, but most of the time it is OK.)
2)The water filter dispenser is on the inside of the fridge compartment rather than on the outside of the unit.Combined with the fact that its flow is a little on the slow side, it seems to me that a lot of energy is wasted each time I have to leave the door open for 30 seconds to get a glass of water.
3)The top cover of the Chef's Pantry drawer is not the highest quality component.It pops off once every two weeks or so for me (though, in fairness, my wife doesn't report this problem, so it might just be me).It's easy to put back on, but something I don't feel that I should have to worry about with a $1600 fridge.

Overall, we probably would buy the same fridge again.I'd probably pass on the water filtration option until they figure out a way to get access from the outside of the fridge.I'd probably also want to make sure to get the extended warranty.

The fridge is nice over all lots of shelves to adjust etc.After about 8 months in I started to hear a knocking noise sometimes late at night coming from the fridge.Diagnosed the ice maker in the top left gets jammed up and tried to keep making ice it will not shut off so the gears that turn the ice into the bin just grind away.This is going on for about 5 months now and sometimes its once a week and lately its every day sometimes twice a day.I am in contact with GE to fix but other reviews many people were told it was normal and there was no fix.Just a fair warning if you are going to drop over $2k on a fridge I would make sure they have this issue fixed.If you look around on the Net its a very common problem with this fridge with a lot of very frustrated users and customer service techs trying to tell me its normal for my fridge to sound like someone is knocking on the door for 1 hour straight at all hours of the day and night which is unacceptable.

AquaFresh Replacement Filter for Whirlpool 4396508 Review

We purchased this filter (AquaFresh WF285) from another online retailer as a less expensive alternative to our Whirlpool brand filter. Bad choice.

Immediately after installing it we noticed it was producing lots of very tiny black particles of debris in the water, even though we had run the recommended 2 quarts of water through it. Long story short, over 30 minutes and 20 quarts of water later, the water was still filled with these very small carbon pieces, almost like black dust.

We removed it and put our Whirlpool brand filter back in, and within 4 quarts the debris started to go away, and after 6 quarts the water was running clean again.

So, we assumed that we must have simply received a defective filter. Not so.

We contacted the online retailer and they sent us a new one in exchange, and the new one gave us the same exact results. We ran gallon after gallon of water through it (thoroughly rinsing the jug between fills to make sure we weren't seeing lingering remnant debris), and still the second replacement WF285 kept producing water filled with black carbon dust.

However, you do need a keen eye to notice it so I'm guessing that's why we haven't found other negative reviews of the product yet. We believe it's likely that most people simply don't notice the carbon dust after a few quarts because it's so fine, and I'm willing to bet that a lot of people are drinking some carbon-dusty water right now because they've never taken a close look at their water after using this.

If you have this product, fill a white (or very light) colored bowl or juice jug with it and let it sit for a few seconds and watch it under good lighting. You will notice that as the water settles the carbon dust begins to rise to the top and swirl together, making it more visible for people with poor eyesight.

We've switched back to the actual Whirlpool brand and our fridge water is perfectly clean again. Too bad, we were really hoping to save some money because the Whirlpool filters are so much more expensive, but it's totally not worth drinking nasty water from poorly made filters to save a lousy 10 bucks. This experience has us back to buying filters direct from Whirlpool now at a premium. Major bummer.

The Background:
I first thought of the BeerTender from Heineken as the 5L kegs are simple, easy to use and a big hit at parties and keeping the beer cool and out of the fridge is a challenge.While in a specialty shop I saw several other foreign brands of beer also in 5L kegs, but to my surprise, their tap was at the bottom like a Gatorade cooler.I then learned that the Heineken Draft kegs have an internal pressure system and that the Beertender would only work with that particular type of keg.

The Search:
At first it didn't really matter that much to me because I love Heineken and Heineken Light.After seeing the variety of beers available in the 5L minikegs, I decided to start shopping for a kegerator that would work with more than just the Draftkeg line.A low price was important, but so was functionality and reliablility.While searching, I found several other options with most looking similar and having the same features.You can go crazy and get one of the $300+ models out there, but I'd only recommend doing that if you have that kind of cash-flow to spend on a counter-top beer dispenser.

The Product:
The EdgeStar Mini Kegerator jumped out at me first because of its low price, and second, because it's identical to the more expensive Avanti MBD5L Mini Kegerator.(Note: Although the Edgestar doesn't display a drip tray like the Avanti, one is included.)For about $50, you can purchase a CO2 kit to tap and use non-pressurized 5L kegs from any other brewer (I've even seen it suggested that home-made beer can be placed in such a keg.)The kit comes with three 16-Gram CO2 cartridges (the small silver ones that you can pick up at Walmart) which are enough to dispense 3 or more 5L kegs.If you don't feel like replacing the cartridge every time you change the keg out, the space provided for the CO2 canister is large enough to accommodate a larger (340-Gram) CO2 Cylinder which is enough to dispense up to 20 5L kegs!The EdgeStar comes with a direction booklet, a cleaner bottle to wash out the system, an AC cable and DC cable, and an adapter for the Heineken Draft kegs.

Personal Mini Fridge Cooler / Warmer BLACK Review

I thought that this would be a good gift for my brother-in-law's home office. He always likes a cool drink at hand. First of all I didn't particularly care about the condition when it arrived. It definitely didn't look new with a number of fingernail scratches on the top in the handle area although the box it came in seemed unmolested and the packing seemed original. The black finish also looked hazy. This product is also billed as an "office" cooler but the inside caution sheet said that it had to be turned off after a few hours "or damage will occur". Their description here at Amazon says 10 hours but I don't recall seeing that when I ordered this as a Christmas gift. So you have to babysit this thing all day to make sure it doesn't die? Not much of a "office" cooler. It is also a bit noisy with the fan in the back being loud. It uses the same fan as your average computer case so you'd think it would be about as loud as that. But it's louder.

Overall, I wouldn't do this product again for what I intended, keeping drinks cool at the office. Maybe for the car or something but it's really kind of stupid design for that use.

KitchenAid : KFIS25XVMS Refrigerator Review

This refrigerator replaced one of those double door refrigerators that had 5 freezer shelves which were too narrow to accomodate frozen pizzas or a 22 lb turkey. I hated the old fridge. It looked nice, but was pretty useless and impractical.
My new Kitchenaid refrigerator/freezer is great. Food items are clearly visible and there is plenty of storage space on both doors that allow for varied heigths depending on your needs. Electronic controls allows for consistent temp. Vegetable and fruit storage is accomodated with large bins and coldcuts and cheeses have their own storage drawers. There is an alarm that alerts you if the doors are not properly closed and a constant readout indicating temperature. A water dispenser is mounted on an exterior door which I don't use much.
The lower mounted freezer has two deep baskets that hold pretty much everything with an adjustable slide for more efficient storage.
The stainless steel exterior glistens and offers a lot of flexibility re: home decor. The exterior does require a weekly cleaning with stainless cleaner.
I like the quality, performance, and appearance and bought as second similar unit without the water dispenser.

As much as I liked a similar GE Profle model with LED lights, I couldn't justify spending $800 to buy LED lights (the primary if not the only distinction between this model and the GE).I specifically wanted this model because it does not have the door ice/water dispenser, which seems to be especially prone to freezing and other issues across all brands of French Door/Bottom Freezer fridges on the market.

This fridge is huge, as others have stated, both inside and outside.I bought it knowing it would never fit where the old fridge was--eventually, we will build a kitchen around this fridge.For now, it is great to have digital temperature controls, a very large freezer space, and, as someone who is very tall, it is great to be able to see inside the fridge without bending over.

The door pockets are very deep--enough so to hold a gallon of milk in either the left or the right door.The shelves slide out.There's 4 vegetable drawers and the fridge came with a "bonus plastic shoe box" as an extra crisper/box thingy.The compressor noise is very minimal--most of the time, the fridge is virtually silent.

Another reviewer mentioned the door alarm--yes, it's loud, but it doesn't come on until the doors have been for a few minutes--more than enough time to get jobs done.And from thereon, it seems to beep 3 times and then stay silent for 60 seconds.I think that's reasonable.The door alarm is important because these French Door fridges can appear to be closed but actually be open.That is a flaw across brands and seems intrinsic to keeping the gap between the doors sealed vs. visibility of the gap--so the door alarm serves an important purpose.
We've had this over a month and love it.The only complaints are that the finish marks easily (greasy fingers) and the lights are hot to the touch.But it looks sharp, keeps food cold, and has lots of space.
